Early morning blaze destroys apartment building units

Fire broke out in the Fairlawn Gardens apartments, 106 Eclipse Court in Martinsburg early Thursday morning.

Units from Martinsburg, Bedington, Baker Heights, Hedgesville and the West Virginia Air National Guard’s 167th Airlift Wing responded to the fire.

At least 24 units were destroyed or heavily damaged. The roof was gone across most of the apartment complex, and the fire appeared to work its way through the roof, jumping over the wide, cinder block stairwells that separate the apartment units.

The most heavily damaged units faced the Tractor Supply store on North Queen Street.

Same Hospitals – New Names

At a news conference, it was announced that West Virginia University Hospitals – East will now be known as WV University Healthcare.

City Hospital of Martinsburg is now Berkeley Medical Center, and Jefferson Memorial Hospital is now Jefferson Medical Center.

A new sign now hangs on the side of Berkeley Medical Center facing Interstate 81.

Berkeley County Public School Schedule

At the Monday night (05/06) meeting, the Berkeley County Board of Education voted on the proposed 2013-2014 school calender.

The calendar shows that the school year is scheduled to begin on August 19, 2013, and the last day of instruction (weather permitting) will be June 2, 2014. There are eight “snow days” built into the schedule.

In addition, Labor Day (9/2), Veterans Day (11/11), Thanksgiving (11/28), Christmas (12/25), New Years (01/01), Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (01/20), Primary Election Day (05/13) and Memorial Day (05/26) will be holidays that fall within the calender year.

It was also announced that the spring break period will be before Easter, since Eastern will be late in 2014 (April 20th).

Fire Board to bill tax exempts

Berkeley County Fire Board President Greg Rhoe reported to the Berkeley County Council Thursday that the board will send fire fee billings to tax exempt property owners. Rhoe says this will raise between $95,000 and $100,000, based on 239 properties.

Jail bill climbs

Berkeley County administrator Deborah Hammond reported to the Berkeley County Council on Thursday that the monthly jail bill for April 2013 was $282,891. That total is $17,274 more than April 2012; $31,427 more than April 2011; and $75,848 more than April 2010.

Busy Monday for firefighters

THERE WAS A REPORT OF A FIRE AT THE GUARDIAN FIBERGLASS FACTORY IN THE 48-HUNDRED BLOCK OF TABLOR STATION ROAD. THE FIRE WAS REPORTED “OUT” AROUND 2:42 P-M, BUT IT TOOK AT LEAST ANOTHER HOUR TO VENT THE BUILDING OF SMOKE.

THERE WAS ALSO A GRASS FIRE ON BERKELEY STATION ROAD, NEAR HANDSHEE LANE.

NO REPORTS OF INJURIES IN EITHER FIRE.

Agreement between area schools

Blue Ridge Community and Technical College and the University of Charleston-Martinsburg have signed an articulation and transfer agreement to assist students in a seemless transition between the two schools.

The Blue Ridge CTC Accounting and Business programs and UC Accounting and Business Administration programs are especially named in the 2+2 agreement.

The main campus of Blue Ridge CTC is located at 13650 Apple Harvest Drive in Martinsburg.

Super Bowl MVP at Celebrity Sports Breakfast

1982 NFL Most Valuable Player Mark Mosely of the Washington Redskins will be the guest of honor at the 2013 Celebrity Sports Breakfast on Saturday, April 6th from 9 am to 11 am.

The event will be held at the Berkeley Senior Center, 217 N. High Street in Martinsburg.

Tickets are $15, and available at the center, or the Visitors Center, 115 N. Queen Street.

A Washington Redskins Super Bowl ring will also be on display.

February 2013 Unemployment

West Virginia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for February 2013 is 7.3 percent.

Jefferson County: 5.1 (DOWN from 5.3 in January); Berkeley County: 7 percent (up from 6.7 percent); Morgan County: 8 percent (up from 7.6 percent, and higher that 2012); Hampshire County: 8.6 percent (up from 8.2 percent); Hardy County: 9.2 percent (DOWN from 9.5 percent); and Pendelton County: 7.1 percent (up from 6.9 percent).

Clay County has a 17 percent unemployment rate, while Monongalia County has 4.9 percent unemployment.
