Berkeley County School Board meeting

22 March 2016 Local News

Celebration was in the air at Monday’s Berkeley County Board of Education meeting.

Aaceremony was held for this year’s new National Board Certified teachers. Eight teachers were certified, and one teacher was re-certified, bringing the total number of National Board Certified teachers in Berkeley County to 80, the second-highest number in the state.

The Berkeley County Strings Program, which includes the Berkeley County Middle School Orchestra and the Berkeley County High School Symphony Orchestra, provided entertainment for the teachers’ ceremony. Eva Price, director of the Strings Program, spoke during citizens’ forum to thank Superintendent Manny Arvon and the school board for their continued support of the program. The Berkeley County Strings Program began in 1996 with seven students. As one of the few orchestras in the state, the Strings Program has consistently earned first or second place at the West Virginia Orchestra Festival.

John and Michelle Dugan, a couple with three young children, also spoke in the citizens’ forum to recognize the staff at Berkeley Heights Elementary School for saving their son’s life. Brendan Dugan, a mentally-challenged student, was choking during breakfast on March 14th. He soon became unresponsive, and a school nurse named Bobbi Jean administered CPR and brought Brendan back to life. Brendan’s father emphatically thanked her and the other nurses and teachers for their heroic deed. He presented Bobbi Jean with flowers, and she spoke to the audience about her admiration for Brendan, who teachers and fellow students call the ambassador of Berkeley Heights Elementary. She also thanked her fellow nurses for their skills and dedication.

Other awards presented last night were:

A Caring Educator award – Jolie Nunn, sixth-grade math teacher at Spring Mills Middle School
